The first fully organic golf course in Canada, Blackburn Meadows was designed by
well-known golf course designer Jeff Shaw. Nestled in a lush valley next to Blackburn Lake on beautiful Salt Spring
Island, our superb 1608-yard links-style 9-hole course is a delightful
challenge for both new and die-hard golfers. |
Constructed over a two year period from 1990-92, our greens and fairways
are lovingly maintained using only natural organic methods. Particular
attention has been paid to the drainage of greens, fairways and bunkers to ensure
the best possible playing conditions regardless of the weather. Come and join us where the eagles soar! |

We get you off to a great start.
Hole #1 features a creek and an out-of- bounds (OB) on the right, a lateral
water hazard (wetland) to the left, and thick brush behind the green to
guard against aggressive or wayward shots.

Hole
#2
Par 4 - 216/160 yards |
# 2 |
Two tee boxes separated by marsh start this difficult hole.
The long grass and OB on the right have swallowed many a
ball, as has a lateral water hazard on the left. A narrow approach to
a deceptive green requires steady nerves on the tee.

Hole 3
Par 3 - 144 yards |
A former meadow, this wide hole with a good-sized triangular green provides
a large target, but long grass and OB on the right are closer than they
look. While a lateral water hazard on the left has an infuriating
little finger that grabs many short shots.

# 4 |

Crossing the bridge brings you to a short hole made even more challenging by
its elevated green and blind pin placement. Shots left or right of the long,
narrow green find large, old trees that create trouble or, on occasion, drop
a shot near the hole. A separate upper tee box makes an interesting back
nine. |

# 5 |
Hole 5
Par 4 - 246 / 215 yards |
Blackburn's signature hole, # 5 features a narrow fairway and
a large pond on the right guarding the approach to the green. There's
trouble left or right, and a deep ditch behind the green swallows many an
aggressive shot. A straight tee shot is required to navigate the
narrow throat in front of the green, and many golfers decide it's best to
play safe and lay up. |

Hole 6
Par 4 - 251 / 187 yards |
# 6 |
From the back tee box, # 6 is a truly daunting hole. A marsh in front,
two ponds in most golfers landing zone, and Blackburn Lake on the right make
for an intimidating first shot. The front tee requires a long iron or
fairway wood to reach the green. (May we suggest the forward tee on your
first visit, and the back tee on your second nine?) The wide, shallow green
awaits a good approach, but Blackburn Creek flows just behind the green. |

# 7 |
Hole 7
Par 3 - 90 yards |
Hole # 7 is a nice, short par 3, a birdie chance for everyone. But the creek
on the right and a short ditch to the left have created bogies for many!

Hole 8
Par 4 - 226 yards |
# 8 |
Number 8's deceptively wide fairway narrows to a
large, flat green. Lateral water hazards to the left and right, and a
pond behind the green are picturesque but treacherous.

# 9 |
Hole 9
Par 4 - 235 yards |
The uphill fairway and elevated green make this hole
much longer to reach than the posted distance suggests. Shots to the
right will give a good view of the hole, but a ball short left leaves a
difficult short pitch over a steep rise to the green. A green that
slopes down from front to rear makes it very difficult to stop a ball on the
green, let alone near the hole.

natural
organic methods |
On Salt Spring Island water is a precious commodity, and islanders care
passionately about the environment, two reasons why Blackburn Meadows is
a fully organic golf course—the first in Canada.
Blackburn Meadows is part of the Blackburn and Cusheon Lake watersheds which
provide drinking water to our island homes. By keeping our course
pesticide- and chemical fertilizer-free, we are able to nurture these
watersheds and provide golfers with the unique experience of a golf course
that features a salmon spawning creek, and natural wetlands that are nesting habitats for numerous
bird species and a large beaver colony in our lake.
And, while organic maintenance means that occasionally the turf may be a
bit rougher looking than you may be used to, our many golfers assure us that
the quality of play is always high and our greens are perfect just the way
they are!
